Lucky me. I arrived in Singapore to find their Biennale in the Singapore Art Museum and other Museums and institutions around town. It has been a great introduction to the Southeast Asian geography and culture. Salvador Dali what gesture!!! Value drawings.  The old masters called the use of value to show form, "Chiaorscuro." Usually low key compositions with intense lighting. (pretty hard to pull off with candles!) To my life drawing students, see how they build the "scaffolding." This method of teaching involves one year of intensive drawing from casts. Look how emotional these paintings and drawings have become by not "reporting" all of the facts. They are creating an illusion of reality, not reporting all of the details. Live, love, and make art like that moment; as if you were about to die."~ Odd Nerdrum American Artist Magazine's October edition features an article about Odd Nerdrum. The article discusses Nerdrum's work as philosophical allegories. Always intriguing work with spiritual undertones. Reminiscent of Rembrandt. Nerdrum uses only four colors but he premixes the palette and tubes the colors he uses in his paintings. Curiously, he mixes blue from mars black and titanium white.
