Cool Artists of the Week

Paul S. Brown
Classical Realism
This man loves great wine and cigars
as well as many other finer things in life
Notice his color choices - evidence of the "three finger salute!"
He paints his still lifes with incredible painterly detail - but-
Notice how loose his strokes become in the landscapes
Absolutely stunning work
(He grinds his own oil paint!)

Angela Fraleigh
Very large
mixes representational images with abstractions

David Jon Kassan

Nancy MacDonald
Lovely work
Notice how she handles the oils and pastels in a similar manner
The stroke of the brush and pastel are expressive
she understands light - and knows how to use color

I hope you all had a restful Thanksgiving
I am presently working on a huge portrait in oil of my son, Brooks
(as well as an addition to the Surface Tension series)
Can't wait to share it with you - maybe in a few days
Wonderful model!

John Constable, "Seascape study with rain clouds" SEASCAPES In my latest critique group, an abstract artist asked me what I saw when I looked at abstract art. My answer was simple. The same ideas used in abstract art are evident and important in representational art. ESPECIALLY in landscapes. We will reinforce the elements and principles of design that make seascapes powerful expressions of a place and time. I will be referencing Ed Whitney's critiques of seascapes. All great landscapes are abstract paintings. Here are some wonderful seascapes. Why do they attract your attention? SINGAPORE BIENNALE 2016

Lucky me. I arrived in Singapore to find their Biennale in the Singapore Art Museum and other Museums and institutions around town. It has been a great introduction to the Southeast Asian geography and culture. Many visits have pulled me out of an extreme state of jet lag and whetted my appetite to learn more about Southeast Asia. Singapore Biennale AN ATLAS OF MIRRORS - AT ONCE, MANY WORLDS "In charting our way around the world, humankind has relied on instruments of vision as well as navigation. Atlases map and mirror our journeys of discovery and often make visible more than just physical terrain; driven by our needs and desires, they embolden us to venture into the unknown. From our coordinates in Southeast Asia, the arc of our shared histories encompasses East and South Asia. These regions bear the imprints of one another's diverse cultures, even as boundaries are also constantly reimagined. Fraught and unstable, these borders are characterized by fluid mo...

Drawing Class March 4, 2010

FINALLY!!!! Hands Hands Hands I will show you the anatomy of your lower arms, wrist and hands. You will understand the underlying basic shapes and proportions of your wrist, thumb and fingers. I will bring some of my anatomy books with incredible drawings. Please bring your sketchbooks, pencils and erasers and some tracing paper. I will bring a roll if you don't have any for class. Find pictures in magazines or photos of hands. Bring them to class. Try to find foreshortened views. (Yes, that F word!) We will be finding the shapes in the photos. You will be tracing the anatomy so you understand it when you observe your own hands. You are your best model. Perfect sketchbook fodder. Waiting for anything will never be boring again! See you Thursday! I will not be able to teach on 3/25. I am joining the board of National Association of Women Artists. One of their few board meetings lies on that thursday. Ink wash lessons were scheduled for this day. I will discuss an alternate day when ...
