"It takes two to paint. One to paint, the other to stand by with an axe to kill him before he spoils it." ~William Merritt Chase

CSMART open studio Thursday night

OK, update on Tuesday morning - not Sunday afternoon.
Renovation is a dirty word, but is now happening in my home.

Boca painting students - no class on Friday, Nov. 11th
Veterans Day - Go see Joe Green's veteran's day parade

Wonderful article in the Wall Street Journal on Saturday about Mr. Blanc
His desk is placed upon a large aquarium, has 10 different types of birds in his home for insect control and starts his days with a glass of champagne.
His sketches are outrageous plans of plants
He makes wire sculptures for the plants to grow upon
He looks a bit like a leprechaun - a wonderful life of creativity

George Shipperley Great example of "everything is an abstract!"
Reminds me of Klimpt's work. Beautiful color statements.
Second place in Artist's magazine contest for landscape/interior

Brad Lethaby
I am quite fond of his landscapes - wonderful brush strokes and color sense.

Michael Mentler Very creative portrayal of the figure
Notice how he incorporates a grid

Noah Buchanan
I notice the influence of his instructors - especially Assael
He earned a MFA from the NY Academy
Exquisite understanding of color and anatomy

Kristy Gordon
Look at her "Barbie still lifes!"
Barbie is a boomer icon. I had the first version with the b/w bathing suit.
See how anything can be beautiful.
Love the diptych of Barbie and the beauties.
Gordon has put her hard work as a painter to use by making a statement.

See you all soon - Enjoy your weekend off.

Thursday, May 6th Drawing Class at ArtServe

John Constable, "Seascape study with rain clouds" SEASCAPES In my latest critique group, an abstract artist asked me what I saw when I looked at abstract art. My answer was simple. The same ideas used in abstract art are evident and important in representational art. ESPECIALLY in landscapes. We will reinforce the elements and principles of design that make seascapes powerful expressions of a place and time. I will be referencing Ed Whitney's critiques of seascapes. All great landscapes are abstract paintings. Here are some wonderful seascapes. Why do they attract your attention? SINGAPORE BIENNALE 2016

Lucky me. I arrived in Singapore to find their Biennale in the Singapore Art Museum and other Museums and institutions around town. It has been a great introduction to the Southeast Asian geography and culture. Many visits have pulled me out of an extreme state of jet lag and whetted my appetite to learn more about Southeast Asia. Singapore Biennale AN ATLAS OF MIRRORS - AT ONCE, MANY WORLDS "In charting our way around the world, humankind has relied on instruments of vision as well as navigation. Atlases map and mirror our journeys of discovery and often make visible more than just physical terrain; driven by our needs and desires, they embolden us to venture into the unknown. From our coordinates in Southeast Asia, the arc of our shared histories encompasses East and South Asia. These regions bear the imprints of one another's diverse cultures, even as boundaries are also constantly reimagined. Fraught and unstable, these borders are characterized by fluid mo...

Drawing Class March 4, 2010

FINALLY!!!! Hands Hands Hands I will show you the anatomy of your lower arms, wrist and hands. You will understand the underlying basic shapes and proportions of your wrist, thumb and fingers. I will bring some of my anatomy books with incredible drawings. Please bring your sketchbooks, pencils and erasers and some tracing paper. I will bring a roll if you don't have any for class. Find pictures in magazines or photos of hands. Bring them to class. Try to find foreshortened views. (Yes, that F word!) We will be finding the shapes in the photos. You will be tracing the anatomy so you understand it when you observe your own hands. You are your best model. Perfect sketchbook fodder. Waiting for anything will never be boring again! See you Thursday! I will not be able to teach on 3/25. I am joining the board of National Association of Women Artists. One of their few board meetings lies on that thursday. Ink wash lessons were scheduled for this day. I will discuss an alternate day when ...
