TONAL DRAWING
You have heard me talk of "drawing like a painter" many times. Tonal drawing focuses on the abstract forms in a drawing as opposed to the outlines of the shapes.

Jen Hagen wrote an article in Drawing magazine recently about tonal drawing. Look for an email from www.yousendit.com. You can download the article and print it if you wish. I will bring some copies with me to class. Great step by step photos of straight gestural lines developing into lovely tonal patterns.
She says, "I think in terms of the envelope of space that the model fills, rather than the precise lines that identify the edges of the separate forms. The first marks don't have to be completely accurate. They just have to capture the gesture and place the figure in proportion."

The link I posted for figure drawing is for the atelier with whom she studies.
Here it is again

Another wonderful article from 2006

Georges Seurat made absolutely wonderful tonal drawings
Here is a whole google page of them

The work of Wendy Artin is amazing
She uses watercolor to make tonal statements

George Inness (1825-1894) was part of the famed Hudson River School
You will see a lot of landscapes painted as tonal paintings
Here is a link to his gallery

James Whistler
Another tonal painter. Look at his drawings. You will see them from across the room!

Suggested materials
Charcoal paper
paper towels
Stumps (if you have them)
Kneaded erasers
A board to draw on
Anything interesting you might want to study
I will bring some objects of interest

See you there!

"If someone says, "can't," that shows you what to do" John Cage

Peggy Probably the hardest part of making art is to show your soul.  It has been said that the first 20 seconds of a drawing or painting set the mood for the next 20 hours. Gesture is everything. It is not so much how long a piece might take but when you made it.  Last weekend I went to Art Wynwood and saw  a lot of very marketable  artwork. After leaving, my friend, Susan Megur asked me what piece stuck in my mind. I could not answer that question. What a shame.  Make your art like it is part of your soul. Find what it is about something that you make that moves you. Make it about emotion, politics, color or just plain beauty. Anything that makes you and your viewer move from their comfort zone of visual boredom .  Cool artists of the week: Sybelle Peretti works with transparent glass images. Stops me in my tracks! SINGAPORE BIENNALE 2016

Lucky me. I arrived in Singapore to find their Biennale in the Singapore Art Museum and other Museums and institutions around town. It has been a great introduction to the Southeast Asian geography and culture. Many visits have pulled me out of an extreme state of jet lag and whetted my appetite to learn more about Southeast Asia. Singapore Biennale AN ATLAS OF MIRRORS - AT ONCE, MANY WORLDS "In charting our way around the world, humankind has relied on instruments of vision as well as navigation. Atlases map and mirror our journeys of discovery and often make visible more than just physical terrain; driven by our needs and desires, they embolden us to venture into the unknown. From our coordinates in Southeast Asia, the arc of our shared histories encompasses East and South Asia. These regions bear the imprints of one another's diverse cultures, even as boundaries are also constantly reimagined. Fraught and unstable, these borders are characterized by fluid mo...
