Drawing from Photographs - Your Family We all have favorite photos of our family or friends. Since "you are the editor," you will incorporate the information we have reinforced in this class when drawing your favorites. I will strongly reinforce composition, negative and positive space and value structure. Bring in a photo that is dear to you or you just find intriguing. Drawing kits: Graphite or charcoal Color if you wish. Bristol paper for graphite Charcoal paper for charcoal Cool Artist links. I chose photorealists. By no means do you have to try to be a photorealist. They have no qualms about copying the photo exactly. You, my friends, may choose to interpret otherwise. Self Portrait 102 We will be drawing ourselves in mirrors. My mirrors are small ovals. If you have a larger one you might be more comfortable drawing from, please bring it to class. I will explain and demonstrate the basic proportions of our faces. I will point out a few common mistakes that will make this easier for you. You will be surprised at your success with a bit of knowledge! Self portraits have been historically used as signatures, projections of self, and as narratives. Gothic architects sometimes snuck statues of themselves in cathedrals. Renaissance artists projected themselves at a more elevated social status with the intention of attracting the attention of more wealthier clients. Suggested materials: Pencil or charcoal kits or any medium with which you would like to experiment Paper a support to draw upon Here are a few very cool web sites to check out A full range of self portraits through history http://www.artlex.com/ArtLex/s/self-portrait.html Some of my favorites we

DRAWING FROM MEMORY Memory drawing exercises train artists to use their own eyes and develop their powers of observation. The most comprehensive book about memory training for artists was written in the 1840's by Horace Lecoq de Boisbaudran. Lecoq recognized that the ability to remember is not just a mechanical aptitude but a major part of our individuality as artists and human beings. Some of Lecoq's students were August Rodin James McNeill Whistler Edgar Degas scoffed at painting from nature. He composed his finished oil paintings from memory. Photographic reference material negates the practice of training the visual memory. We will discuss and practice the techniques of drawing from memory. My Tu Tu used to tell me, "Use it or lose it!" I hope this is a practice that we can all use for life. Here is a great article about memory drawing with examples of intense memory drawing training http://www.allbusiness.com/retail-trade/miscellaneous-retail-miscellaneous-shoppi

John Constable, "Seascape study with rain clouds" SEASCAPES In my latest critique group, an abstract artist asked me what I saw when I looked at abstract art. My answer was simple. The same ideas used in abstract art are evident and important in representational art. ESPECIALLY in landscapes. We will reinforce the elements and principles of design that make seascapes powerful expressions of a place and time. I will be referencing Ed Whitney's critiques of seascapes. All great landscapes are abstract paintings. Here are some wonderful seascapes. Why do they attract your attention? Justin Clayton http://www.justinspaintings.com/index.php?x=about Toni Grote Abstracts....look how real they look! http://artisttonigrote.blogspot.com/ Winslow Homer The classic master in composition. http://www.nga.gov/feature/homer/homersplash.htm Annabelle Greenhalgh Good Welsh girl.
