What moves men of genius, or rather what inspires their work, is not new ideas, but their obsession with the idea that what has already been said is still not enough, "Eugene Delacroix"

ART MIAMI! Romi and I went to Art Miami, Scope and Art Asia on Saturday. Amazing show of interesting ideas - some quite entertaining as well as fantastic skill and technical ability. Art Asia always opens my eyes. My experiences traveling left the impression that not only is Asia on the other side of the earth, but on the other side of your eyeballs. Here are some of my favorites. Too many to list - Just a few that left an impression on me. Sybelle Peretti  She etches into glass on which she manipulates pigment and images. The photos do not do her justice. I saw her work in Scope last year - still it stops me in my tracks. Julie Heffernan   I love "Self portrait sitting on world." Look carefully at these classically painted allegories. Rachel Bess  All of her beautifully painted, thought provoking portraits were sold. I was immediately drawn to her painting technique - stunning - and the imagery she chose. Koon Wai-bong  Exceptional Chi

Art is about paying attention," Laurie Anderson

Renovating our kitchen and waiting for the refrigerator to be repaired for 1 1/2 weeks. Life is kinda upside down - or simpler. Memories of cruising on a sailboat -  collecting water to wash dishes in the small sink! Ah - as well with my work right now. Looking forward to making some paintings and finishing my next monster drawing. Nica coming to sit again tomorrow morn. Painting with my favorite artists in my studio. Very cool link posted by  Sibel Kocabaşı on Facebook Love this - check it out - life drawing students! Vanitas Neysa Grassi  These paintings are all about the process and surface. Beautiful. Tony Scherman  This man has the ability and talent that shine through whatever medium he chooses. It would be interesting to see his paintings of encaustic on canvas with oils. This ease with imagery transcends technique. Susanna Coffey  Everyone should paint a self portrait Sidney Goodman  Yes, he paints AND draws  A true inspiration. See you in class!

"It takes two to paint. One to paint, the other to stand by with an axe to kill him before he spoils it." ~William Merritt Chase

Boca painting students - no class on Friday, Nov. 11th Veterans Day - Go see Joe Green's veteran's day parade The very coolest man - Patrick Blanc - designer of vertical gardens   Wonderful article in the Wall Street Journal on Saturday about Mr. Blanc His desk is placed upon a large aquarium, has 10 different types of birds in his home for insect control and starts his days with a glass of champagne. His sketches are outrageous plans of plants He makes wire sculptures for the plants to grow upon He looks a bit like a leprechaun - a wonderful life of creativity George Shipperley  Great example of "everything is an abstract!" Reminds me of Klimpt's work. Beautiful color statements. Second place in Artist's magazine contest for landscape/interior Brad Lethaby I

"Art is Nature speeded up and God slowed down," Chazal

Every month a group of respected artists/friends meet for "Critique group" This Sunday, the word of the afternoon was "destroy it! I'm bored!" How do we artists push ourselves to think differently? "Release yourself from yourself," Steve Assael I guess my aching arm, back and hand are trying to tell me to  "step away from the painting." Friday, I took my few painting students to the Boca Raton Museum of Art First, we wandered through Frederico Uribe's incredible installation He was awarded a grant from puma shoe company Created an entire rainforest from partially completed PUMA shoes IT IS A MUST SEE! Very refreshing, clever and fun. Frederico Uribe   Really look at how he found similar shapes He saw flowers in plumbing parts, wings in artificial nails. Here is an artist who thinks! Don't miss this exhibit! It will be leaving in early November. Juan Bautista Nieto  Unbelievable  Stunning

"Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice, heart and intuition." - Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs 1955 - 2011 Mastermind of Mac and Apple products.  Simplicity for the masses. Isn't it so? How hard to stay true to your inner heart and intuition. It takes guts. Interesting article in September 2011 Artists magazine by Jane Jones. In the "Brushing up" section. Check out a diluted version of complementary compositions    Jones details different ways to use intensity (chroma) to control your focus The article has some great examples of simultaneous contrast I will bring it to class to show you - good example. Cool artists of the week Max Ferguson  Hyper real, extremely well composed.  Ferguson was trained in Amsterdam. He adheres canvas to aluminum. His portraits are incredible. Across the board, well done. Drawings, watercolors, oils, etchings.  Kent Lovelace  Gorgeous oil on copper. Featured in Sept. Artists Mag. He lives on Widbey Island, WA. Near where I used to live. A magical spot. Lovely light in his landscape

Gifts from the Sea!

Finally, a grouping of 12 pieces on my studio wall.  My dear friend, Amanda Miles, gave me a book by Anne Morrow Lindberg called "A Gift from the Sea." In the 1950's, Lindberg took a sabbatical from being the matriarch of a large family. She spent time in a beach cottage at Sanibel Island, FL. Her introspective time away from her family ultimately led her to compare the shapes of sea shells to passages of life as a woman and mother.  My imaginary shells were inspired from three words Lindberg used to connect the shells to motherhood. As you walk down the beach, you will notice that eroded shells were once cradles, shield and vessels. Inevitably, nearby will lie a piece of plastic that is almost untouched by the weather. Both elements are "discarded." Their purpose, somewhat like the seasons of a woman's role as a wife and mother, has changed. The connections between the function of the worn plastic and shell shapes inspired these compositions.  Th

"Thought must come first" ~ Odd Nerdrum

"Moonfairy" Marcia @ CSMART Hour sketch Come join us Thursday evenings 6:30 - 8:30 Open studio ~ no instruction "You are about to die. There are two paintings on the wall, A Rembrandt and a Mondrian. which is the one you wish to see last? Live, love, and make art like that moment; as if you were about to die."~ Odd Nerdrum American Artist Magazine's October edition features an article about Odd Nerdrum. The article discusses Nerdrum's work as philosophical allegories. Always intriguing work with spiritual undertones. Reminiscent of Rembrandt. Nerdrum uses only four colors but he premixes the palette and tubes the colors he uses in his paintings. Curiously, he mixes blue from mars black and titanium white. Check out this magazine - October American Artist.  The Nerdrum Institute Beginning Drawing Class ~ Perspective and the Fifth perspective by Rudolf Stussi Very cool stuff.
