Sunday, March 20, 2011 Preparing for my lecture about Visual Archaeology to the friends of the Ft. Lauderdale MOA Revisiting the development of this idea is very interesting. Lee Bontecou Her drawings really intrigued me as well as her Drawing into sculpture.  Lee's father and uncle designed the first aluminum canoe and her mom worked in a factory wiring electronics during WWII. She grew up believing she could make anything if she learned the right skills Her retrospective exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago in 2004 was a direct influence on my drawings - the mixture of imagery that has been described as surreal. I don't see them as surreal but organic and original. She has accomplished my desire to move art off the wall. Her welded structures, molded plastic and mobiles hold me spellbound.
