I will bring more viewfinders They are for sale for $10 Please bring a

Monday, April 26 Figures at ArtServe

Vesna will be our model. I concentrated on tonal drawings in my Thursday class. I would like to stress tonal patterns in this class. Check out the figure drawings of Mark Tennant. http://www.marktennantart.com/drawings_n.html If you look closely, you will see beautiful action gesture lines. Notice how the edges disappear. His drawings are painterly because he identifies bold shape patterns. Check out Jean Marcellino. Here are her roman staue drawings http://www.naje.com/rome/ And beautiful figures. Notice how she incorporates the background to describe the figure. http://www.barebrush.com/gallery.php?artwork_id=2309 John Singer Seargent He saw light so perfectly and depicted it so simply I will reference him forever He draws and paints to perfection Notice how simply he states details with blocks of value Sometimes what seems to be so detailed is the flick of the corner of a square brushhttp://www.johnsingersargent.org/ See you tomorrow morn at about 9:30! It always seems to be raining

TONAL DRAWING You have heard me talk of "drawing like a painter" many times. Tonal drawing focuses on the abstract forms in a drawing as opposed to the outlines of the shapes. Jen Hagen wrote an article in Drawing magazine recently about tonal drawing. Look for an email from www.yousendit.com. You can download the article and print it if you wish. I will bring some copies with me to class. Great step by step photos of straight gestural lines developing into lovely tonal patterns. She says, "I think in terms of the envelope of space that the model fills, rather than the precise lines that identify the edges of the separate forms. The first marks don't have to be completely accurate. They just have to capture the gesture and place the figure in proportion." The link I posted for figure drawing is for the atelier with whom she studies. Here it is again http://www.studioincamminati.org/gallery_charcoal.php Another wonderful article from 2006 http://americanartist.ty

Monday, April 19 Figures at ArtServe

Monday's model is Noel She holds incredible poses with the most intense concentration I have sent you a link from www.yousendit.com This is a scanned article about finding the basic cube shapes of the head, ribcage and pelvis in a live model. I did a demonstration of this in class last monday. This article gives great graphic descriptions of this idea. I will bring the ink we used to experiment in last thursday's class. The looseness you gain from working with ink helps with the gestural marks in figure drawing. Also, check out this link. Studio Incamminati is in Philadelphia. There is a great article about tonal drawing. I will bring it to class. Suggested materials: WC paper newsprint and charcoal Any ink you might have. http://www.studioincamminati.org/gallery_charcoal.php See you tomorrow!

Egg Tempera Workshop from the BEST!

I highly recommend this workshop. Egg Tempera is like drawing with paint. You will learn how to mix your own paints and see Suzanne and Pasha's incredible work. They are by far the most knowledgeable artists in their medium. I have talked about them in my thursday class. Don't miss this great opportunity to learn from two master artists who are delightful people. Here is a link to their web site http://www.schererandouporov.com/

COUNTERFEIT! Done!

It shimmers! Silver, gold and copper point drawing on black gesso boards. Copper leaf on the sides....it shimmers and disappears if you look at it the wrong way. Similar to our investments. Sides are gilded with copper and mounted .75" off the surface inside a black box. " The symbols on our currency were selected to illustrate our democratic capitalist society. Our nation’s recent unethical financial decisions have mocked their meaning. A redesigned currency might consist of bubbles, credit card swipes and distorted patterns. Images drawn with silver, gold and copper shimmer on black. Slight angular shifts of light render them first visible, then invisible. Could this visual game be synonymous with the state of our economy?"

In honor of Spring (and Bob) FLOWERS! We will be 'demystifying" flowers. I will bring both real and (not) for you to study. A specific light source makes it easier to describe their shape. Remember, as the light bounces around inside the folds, it becomes warmer, not darker. My most favorite teacher in the ENTIRE UNIVERSE is Jan Hart (next to my dear friend Jane) Check out her website! She just moved from New Mexico to Costa Rica She offers workshops in watercolor painting in Costa Rica (anyone interested in joining me?) Also, here is the book I was mentioning the other day, "A Watercolor Artist's guide to Exceptional Color." She is a delightful person and brilliantly talented teacher. http://www.janhart.com/ Also, the Susan K. Black Foundation sponsors the "Blossom" competition Check out who submitted and won in the past. Some very fine painters made a go for the big prize. Check them out. http://www.susankblackfoundation.org/2006finalists.html Bring
