Thursday April 1 Drawing Class at ArtServe

Today, in honor of April Fool's day, we will be drawing Carnivale Masks from Venice. Our focus for this lesson will be the power of contrast in our compositions. The subjects will be my masks from Venice. The possibilities are endless. Pattern plays a big part in the mask. We will translate that idea to the pattern in your drawing. Materials: Your choice of medium Charcoal or pencil might make great value studies You might consider working white on black or grey viewfinders if you have them. I will bring extras. Figure Drawing ArtServe Dance Studio 10 - 12 Monday

Marcia will be our model. She is angular and holds completely still. Judy will be bringing a large umbrella to pose behind her. This should make for interesting compositions against the mirrors. We will start with our traditional short gestures. I will encourage you to make only 5 to 6 strokes. We will emphasize movement and the balance of weight. I am bringing in some powdered charcoal for experimentation. Use a brush and your eraser to draw bold shapes. I will re emphasize the use of sighting and units of measure. The setting of our model will make you consider the space around her. An umbrella and some dark material with lighting will help you see the model in space. Cool Artists of the week: Robert Armetta http://www.robertarmetta.com/gallery.html Tom Wise Notice his portrait drawings. He really uses the negative space wisely. http://tomwise.com/tomwiseart/Home.html See you there! BE FEARLESS!

Drawing Class March 22, 2010

No Class this Thursday! Instead, we meet in the dance studio at ArtServe on Monday, March 22 from 9:30 - noon. We start this session with multiple gesture drawings. We will draw the model in consecutive moving poses struck for about 30 seconds. I will encourage you to express volume with the side of your charcoal. I will show you how to measure the model. The goal is to have both her head and feet on the paper. NO HANDLESS AND FOOTLESS MODELS IN THIS CLASS! I will show you how to measure proportion and angles of balance. Vesna is our model. She is wonderful. Drawing Class March 18, 2010

Landscapes from Photos Composition is the most important factor in landscapes. The most powerful images are composed as if they were abstract paintings. Roads, rivers, telephone wires, lights and clouds are all examples of compositional tools that lead your eye around a composition. While walking through Art Miami this year, I noticed a Ed Burtynsky's photo work. The subject matter attracted me at first. He had photographed the ship graveyards in Bangladesh. Since my husband rescues ships, I was drawn immediately. Then, I walked through a few more lanes and noticed his work from across the room. Check out his aerial photos of Australia. They looked like incredible abstract paintings and they are BIG. As you get closer, you notice they are salt flats or a port with rivers running inland. http://www.edwardburtynsky.com/ This is a great example of exquisite design taste. This class will be examining the tools to depict space. Some of the vocabulary will be: Foreground, Middleground, B

Rendering Glass and Liquids

Drawing glass requires a basic knowledge of perspective. I will reinforce our perspective lesson. It is a great exercise to strengthen your awareness of value structure and the nuances of hard and soft edges. I will bring in various glass bottles and objects. Please bring in any unusual glass containers as models. I will reinforce our perspective lesson and have the "Hands" handouts for the few that missed last week. Materials: Sketchbook or good paper. Charcoal or graphite and powders with erasers. Patience and NO FEAR! Check out this video from youtube. Speed drawing liquid pouring into a glass. Notice the wide value scale early in the drawing. She/he determines the darkest dark and the lightest light. The drawing seems more convincing as the values are more distinct. This is a great way to approach any drawing. I am waiting for approval from artserve on rescheduling Thursday, 3/25 to that Monday, 3/22. We would be able to have class in the ballet studio. I would love to h

Video of Influence of Women in Art

I am honored to be chosen as one of this group of women artists. Pembroke Pines has funded Studio 18, an Artist's colony where studio space is for rent. It is refreshing to see City funding for the arts. Bravo! to Mr. Benoit Menasche, the curator and driving force for the arts in Pembroke Pines. "> Art Exhibit - Influence Of Women In Art from OCTV on Vimeo . Seven women artists are featured in this exciting art exhibit. There is a contemporary artist, a water colorist, a mixed media sculptor, an oil & acrylic painter, a collage artist, a photographer and a multi-medium artist. There is something for every artistic taste and all are specialists in their disciplines.
