Charcoal on Fabriano Artistico Those of you that attended the Steven Assael Workshops at the Boca Museum School know of his practice to clip his palette next to his painting for a seamless evaluation of color.  Look at this cool product by David Jon Kassan. The parallel palette comes in two sizes. Check this out! David Jon Kassan Beautiful blended skin tone palette. His technique differs from the full palette of Steven Assael. Different results, both exquisite.  Check out his sketchbook live videos. Be prepared to learn from this man. I just realized he is having a week long workshop in Civita Italy - one week painting from a nude model. Gifts from the Sea!

Finally, a grouping of 12 pieces on my studio wall.  My dear friend, Amanda Miles, gave me a book by Anne Morrow Lindberg called "A Gift from the Sea." In the 1950's, Lindberg took a sabbatical from being the matriarch of a large family. She spent time in a beach cottage at Sanibel Island, FL. Her introspective time away from her family ultimately led her to compare the shapes of sea shells to passages of life as a woman and mother.  My imaginary shells were inspired from three words Lindberg used to connect the shells to motherhood. As you walk down the beach, you will notice that eroded shells were once cradles, shield and vessels. Inevitably, nearby will lie a piece of plastic that is almost untouched by the weather. Both elements are "discarded." Their purpose, somewhat like the seasons of a woman's role as a wife and mother, has changed. The connections between the function of the worn plastic and shell shapes inspired these compositions.  Th...

Tuesday, April 19, 2001 Sorry for the delay! My computer was in the hospital. I am now teaching tuesday and friday all day  Boca Raton Museum School. Robert Vickrey's incredible egg tempera paintings on exhibit at the Boca Raton Museum of Art I found out today that he passed away recently, like a few days ago. Fantastic work. Don't miss it. INK Bring any ink you have to play with. Brushes for ink (never to grace paint again!) sticks, q tips, anything to manipulate the ink I will share my supplies. Paper suggestions: Bristol Hot pressed WC paper Cold pressed WC paper (this is rough) Experiment with color: WC or pastels or paint. We will be building textures with varied line qualities.
