Value drawings.  The old masters called the use of value to show form, "Chiaorscuro." Usually low key compositions with intense lighting. (pretty hard to pull off with candles!)

Gesture and the use of line as a scaffold

Emanuela de Musis at the Academy of Realist Art
This gorgeous work is done in the classical method. To my life drawing students, see how they build the "scaffolding." This method of teaching involves one year of intensive drawing from casts.
Look how emotional these paintings and drawings have become by not "reporting" all of the facts. They are creating an illusion of reality, not reporting all of the details.

Most drawing enthusiasts love to make prints, especially etchings or Intaglio. Jake Muirhead's prints are great gestural drawings. Check them out!

Local printmaker extraordinaire and fantastic master printmaker, Ron Garrett,  will be offering classes in his awesome studio in all methods of printmaking. He has increible energy and knowledge of traditional printmaking techniques. I can't wait to work in his studio making and learning more about etchings, etc.
All right in Boca Raton.
I will keep you posted on upcoming classes.

A wonderful connection between classical and contemporary line in two dimensions and three dimensions. She makes wonderful drawings that she translates into marble. This is the expression of line in a truly original manner. Make sure to watch her Ted lecture.
This work moves me!

SINGAPORE BIENNALE 2016

Lucky me. I arrived in Singapore to find their Biennale in the Singapore Art Museum and other Museums and institutions around town. It has been a great introduction to the Southeast Asian geography and culture. Many visits have pulled me out of an extreme state of jet lag and whetted my appetite to learn more about Southeast Asia. Singapore Biennale AN ATLAS OF MIRRORS - AT ONCE, MANY WORLDS "In charting our way around the world, humankind has relied on instruments of vision as well as navigation. Atlases map and mirror our journeys of discovery and often make visible more than just physical terrain; driven by our needs and desires, they embolden us to venture into the unknown. From our coordinates in Southeast Asia, the arc of our shared histories encompasses East and South Asia. These regions bear the imprints of one another's diverse cultures, even as boundaries are also constantly reimagined. Fraught and unstable, these borders are characterized by fluid mo

Drawing Class March 4, 2010

FINALLY!!!! Hands Hands Hands I will show you the anatomy of your lower arms, wrist and hands. You will understand the underlying basic shapes and proportions of your wrist, thumb and fingers. I will bring some of my anatomy books with incredible drawings. Please bring your sketchbooks, pencils and erasers and some tracing paper. I will bring a roll if you don't have any for class. Find pictures in magazines or photos of hands. Bring them to class. Try to find foreshortened views. (Yes, that F word!) We will be finding the shapes in the photos. You will be tracing the anatomy so you understand it when you observe your own hands. You are your best model. Perfect sketchbook fodder. Waiting for anything will never be boring again! See you Thursday! I will not be able to teach on 3/25. I am joining the board of National Association of Women Artists. One of their few board meetings lies on that thursday. Ink wash lessons were scheduled for this day. I will discuss an alternate day when
